Who needs sleep? Many of the best networking opportunites at SXSW Interactive occur at the numerous nighttime events. Badge required for admission to Interactive evening events.

FRIDAY, MARCH 12

LIKE TENSION

Like Tension, an interactive new media installation, looks at the anxiety and indecisiveness that lies at the core of human experience -- featuring work from Jacob Villanueva, Paul Jones, Patrick Wood and Eric Prince. SATURDAY, MARCH 13

HANDSHAKE HAPPY HOUR

What do you get when Milkshake Media and Handwire join forces to throw a party? It's the first-ever Handshake Happy Hour. Start off the conference right with refreshments, music, and--of course--Cheetos for the orangest handshakes at the next party. The Lucky Lounge is just a short walk from the Austin Convention Center: walk west on 5th Street (away from the freeway), just past Congress.

OPENING PARTY

The Opening Party provides your first big opportunity to hob-nob with fellow attendees in a relaxed atmosphere. This year's event takes place at the offices of frog design at 804 Congress. Don't miss out on the fun: veteran SXSW attendees remember the amazing parties that frog put together in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Version 2004 promises to have a special theme related to the 11th year of the Interactive Festival. Are you in or are you out?

Cityfold Magazine hosts Austin's premiere screening of the 2003 Cannes Lion winners reel. Featuring international work from the world's most prestigious advertising competition, this screening and industry mixer is not to be missed. SXSW Film registrants are also invited to this exciting event located in the warehouse district, just a few blocks west of Congress on 4th street.

The cool folks at So New Media bring you the best, most rockin' Book Punk ever! Join us at Austin's hippest new bar for an all night party! Comedy from Neal Pollack, Ben Brown, Claire Zulkey and more! Rock and roll from The Dakota Smith (with The Psychics!) and The Yuppie Pricks! Drinking! Hot South by Southwest nerd fest! While the Long Branch Inn isn't too far from the Opening Party at frog design, cabbing it is probably a better option than walking.

Celebrate the most innovative new destinations on the Internet at the 2004 SXSW Web Awards. You can never get enough of John Halcyon Styn, who returns for another year of emcee duties. Meanwhile, the SXSW crew has cooked up plenty of web-centric surprises to make this year's show even more special. The 2004 ceremony moves to the Downtown Hilton Hotel, so getting there is literally a walk across the street from the Austin Convention Center. Limited complimentary buffet service at 6:00 pm, so plan to arrive early! Also, be sure to tell your friends at home to watch the Newtek webcast.

Celebrating it's fourth year at SXSW Interactive, Fray Cafe is a night of true, personal stories told live and on stage. Join host Ben Brown and featured performers like author Lance Arthur and songwriter Scott Andrew LePera for a unique evening of personal storytelling. And be sure to bring a 5-minute story to tell in the open mic! We've moved to a new venue this year: the ever-so-funky Red Eyed Fly. Getting there from the Hilton after the Web Awards is easy: just walk three blocks north on Red River and the club stands on the right side of the street (the side of street nearest to the freeway).

Hip and smart documentary looking for smarter audience in need of post-Web Awards intellectual stimulation. Ninety-minute movie covers multiple story lines evolving from messages posted on sanfrancisco.craigslist.org on August 4, 2003. Threads include personal ads, job listings, and missed connections. A suburban housewife assembles a diabetic cat support group. An aging, would-be mother seeks her ideal sperm donor. Look for presence of craigslist founder Craig Newmark in audience. For this screening only, no admission fee for SXSW Interactive Festival badgeholders.


MONDAY, MARCH 15

LONG LIVE WEBMONKEY!

Last month Terra Networks announced it would pull the plug on our beloved Webmonkey. We say, "The Monkey Will Never Die!" Come join a slew full of Webmonkey founders and veterans at Lovejoys (our home away from home when we're in Austin) as we toast our loyal readers and the website that was the first of its kind when it debuted way back in 1996. The site inspired many imitators, but there will always only be one Webmonkey.

AIR-Interactive for the Arts is proud to be a part of the 2004 SXSW Interactive Festival. This event allows top web design teams to demonstrate that accessible design can be gloriously implemented on highly interactive multimedia web sites, sites that are donated to Austin artists and musicians. View entries at the Knowbility booth at the SXSW Interactive / Film Trade Show + Exhibition. At Moonshine, we'll have awards, food and music. Getting to the Moonshine from the Austin Convention Center is a snap: just head two blocks east on 3rd Street.

NUCLEAR TACO NIGHT

A celebration of masochistic cuisine. A loose confederation of geeks share the tears of joy that can only come from experiencing one of Austin's newfound underground traditions: nuclear tacos. AUSTIN GAME DEVELOPERS SXSW HAPPY HOUR

Metroid Prime. Star Wars Galaxies. Deus Ex. Ultima Online.What do these award-winning videogames have in common? They were all developed right here in Austin! Austin is the third-largest community of professional videogame and computer game developers in the world. Special guests at this Happy Hour include Richard Garriott, creator of the Ultima series of games, and Warren Spector, creator of the Deus Ex series. Also on hand will be representatives from many of Austin's thirty game development studios. Come out to the Copper Tank (only one block from the Austin Convention Center) to have a drink, talk shop, and explore the convergence of music, film, games and interactive media! Party hosted by the Austin Game Developers. AGD is the local chapter of the International Game Developers Association, the independent, non-profit association established by game developers to foster the creation of a worldwide game development community.

MACHINIMA MEGA MOMENT

Machinima is an up-and-coming medium that fuses the world of filmmaking, animation and 3D gaming technology. Analogous to live-action filmmaking, machinima artists have chosen to record 3D characters in virtual locations, effectively creating films using virtual versions of actors and sets. Paul Marino, Executive Director of the Academy of Machinima Arts and Sciences, has curated a compelling collection of the best machinima works from around the world. At SXSW, he's scheduled to show shorts from international hot spots such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Germany.

Don't miss the screening of the wildly-popular and hilarious series Blood Gulch Chronicles by Texas-based machinima collective Red vs. Blue. Based on the hit video game Halo, Blood Gulch Chronicles is a series following the daily routines of two teams trying to figure out life, happiness and why the hell they are at odds with one another. Red vs. Blue will be screening all of the episodes from the first season, followed by a screening of a new episode created specially for SXSW.

fluffertraX and Forbidden Fruit present the fourth annual SXSW Porn Music Happy Hour. The action takes place at the Lucky Lounge, the same spot where it all went down in 2003.

Hear live electronic music from Richard Devine (Warp Records, Schematic / Atlanta), Proem (Merck Records / Austin), About This Product (Phthalo Records / Houston), Treewave (Dallas), Self-Contained Unit (Austin), and others. Visual art from Pleix Collective, Nate Pagel, Bill Hundley, flora&fauna.visions;, Fork Unstable Media, Robert Hodgin, Sue Costabile, Ben Hodges, Brian Alfred, re-move, Ryan Molloy, Eric Tomberlin, Takagi Masakatsu, Jeffers Egan, and Young Min Kang. The Austin Museum of Digital Art (AMODA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote acccess to and appreciation of digital art. The Digital Showcase is a bi-monthly event featuring live performance of electronic music, ranging from abstract beats to ambient drones, along with various forms of visual art, including video and interactive works. Located just north of the Downtown Hilton Hotel on Neches Street, Bonggo's is the space formerly known as Texture. Free admission for SXSW Interactive badgeholders.
